Importance of Plastic Injection Mold Guide Pin

Guide Pin Structures and Machining Processes in Plastic Injection Molds

In the realm of plastic injection mold applications, guide pin configurations exhibit significant diversity. The standard design, however, typically adheres to the schematic illustrated in Figure 8-2. Functionally, a guide pin must provide a cylindrical surface composed of concentric circles with varying diameters.

Material selection often involves choosing a round steel bar of appropriate dimensions, dictated by both structural specifications and material performance requirements. Throughout the manufacturing process, strict adherence to technical specifications is imperative to ensure optimal functionality.

Technical Specifications for Guide Pins

  1. Concentricity Requirement: At the interface between the guide pin and the stationary mold plate, the concentricity tolerance of the diameter shall not exceed 50% of the diameter tolerance specified for the working section.
  2. Cylindricity Tolerance: The cylindricity of the guide pin’s working section must comply with the prescribed tolerance limits.
  3. Post-Machining Requirements: Following machining operations, all components of the guide pin must meet the precision, surface finish, and heat treatment criteria outlined in the engineering drawings. Where applicable, the working surface shall be uniformly carburized to a depth of 0.8–1.2 mm.

Machining Workflow for Guide Pins

  1. Material Procurement & Cutting
    • Standard material selection: 20 steel (or as specified by the design documentation).
    • Post-cutting allowances: 3–5 mm for facing operations and 3–4 mm for external cylindrical turning.
  2. Facing & Centering Operations
    • First end processing: Turn to retain 1.5–2.5 mm of machining allowance; drill a center hole.
    • Second end processing: Machine to exact dimensions and drill a center hole.
  3. Cylindrical Turning
    • Rough turning: Leave 0.5 mm of grinding allowance on each diameter.
    • Optional operation: Machine grooves to meet specified dimensions.
  4. Intermediate Inspection
    • Verify dimensional compliance with pre-grinding specifications.
  5. Heat Treatment Protocol
    • Carburization: Achieve a uniform case depth of 0.8–1.2 mm.
    • Quenching hardness: 58–62 HRC.
  6. Center Hole Lapping
    • Precision lapping of both center holes to ensure alignment accuracy.
  7. Grinding Operations
    • Cylindrical grinding: Employ both center-type and centerless grinding techniques.
    • Post-grinding allowance: 0.01–0.05 mm for final finishing.
  8. Surface Finishing
    • Lapping process: Reduce surface roughness to meet specified finish requirements.
  9. Final Inspection
    • Comprehensive dimensional verification of all critical features.
